Bacteria in Personal Care

Two German firms have identified probiotic cultures useful for personal care and hygiene products. Applications for the lactic acid bacteria include an anti-caries product that prevents harmful bacteria from causing tooth decay, prevention of odor and regeneration of the skin's protective microbial flora. The first oral hygiene products containing probiotic lactobacilli are expected to arrive in 2007.

The microorganisms reportedly can also be used in lotions or creams to help keep the skin's balance healthy. They can also be used to improve the effectiveness of deodorants and foot sprays and lotions through their ability to inhibit odor-producing bacteria on the feet and armpits.

The probiotic lactic acid bacteria can be used in a live or freeze-dried form. The firms reportedly are negotiating with manufacturers interested in using the bacterial cultures.
