Research from the University of Faisalabad, Pakistan, and Kyung Hee University, Korea, demonstrates the tyrosinase inhibitory effects of natural Galla Rhois extract.
Galla Rhois, a term describing the gall produced by the Chinese sumac aphid, was among 243 oriental herbs screened by the current authors for tyrosinase activity. Its efficacy proved to be approximately twice, nine-fold and 15-fold greater than ascorbic acid, arbutin and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), respectively; although less effective than kojic acid.
A major phenolic compound isolated from Galla Rhois, methyl gallate, showed particular promise as a natural skin whitening agent. The authors note additional research is necessary. For more information, see the complete article abstract, published in Advances in Traditional Medicine.
