A Laboratory Method for Measuring the Water Resistance of Sunscreens
A new laboratory in vitro method for the measurement of sunscreen water resistance uses spectrophotometric analysis of a model skin substitute before and after 80-minute immersion. It gives good correlation with the FDA’s 80-minute immersion SPF results (very water resistant). The method is especially good for screening new formulations or water-resistant technologies.

Comparatively Speaking: Singlet vs. Triplet State of UV Filters
In this discussion, Tony O'Lenick looks to Craig Bonda to explain the photochemical differences between the singlet and triplet states of UV filters. These differences are important to the formulator, as their chemical reactions can lead to the destruction of sunscreens.

UV Transmission Assessment: Influence of Temperature on Substrate Surface
This work evaluates the impact of temperature on test substrate surfaces during the application, spreading and drying steps of the in vitro method to measure ultraviolet (UV) transmission. The authors work in a range between 20°C and 35°C, and demonstrate that controlling temperature is a key test parameter that should be strictly controlled to ensure reliability.

Formulators Forum - Sunscreens: Current Issues and Controversies
Like you, I have attended an astounding number of scientific conferences and have read seemingly unending technical papers dealing with what most of the time are topics of interest to cosmetic chemists. While we always can learn from these meetings and articles, it seems to me that there is a real lack of technical controversy. We sit and quietly accept what is heard as gospel. While we may not agree, we nevertheless just sit back and don’t ask the hard questions. Does this make sense? Was the test design reasonable? Did they use the proper controls?

UVA Skin Protection: Issues and New Developments
Photoinduced degradation and activity in chemical and mineral UV-absorbing actives results in a decrease in UVA protection during topical use, with a corresponding risk of skin pathologies in the user. New developments in UV absorbers are shown to maintain a stable, high level of UVA protection during use.

Preserve and Protect: Shielding the Sunscreen Umbrella
The sunscreen market is trending toward higher SPF levels, but these formulas tend to be more difficult to preserve. This study shows how high-SPF sunscreens can be adequately preserved using nontraditional approaches combining antimicrobials and multifunctional additives with boosting aids.
