Skin is organized horizontally into three distinct layers: epidermis, dermis, and the subcutis. The epidermis is a layer of stratified squamous epithelium that is keratinized. The second layer, the dermis, consists of a complex fibrous matrix set into a mucopolysaccharide gel infiltrated with blood vessels, lymphatic channels, nerves, glandularw ducts and hair follicles. The third layer, the subcutis, is populated primarily by adipocyted. The research reported here focuses on the dermis because it is the site of the primary water retention molecule, hyaluronic acid (HA) in the skin.
