Saving R&D's Sanity While Meeting Today's Consumer Numerous Expectations: The Adaptive Aesthetic Approach

New Lead Image Texture Selector W800 H450px V4

Differentiating is difficult in the hypercompetitive skin care market. Skin care product development is becoming more complex while at the same time demands for shorter development cycles are increasing. Spinning the formulation wheel from concept to reality, from brief to bonus, can be harrowing. The modern formulator and marketing team/brand owner must find better ways to connect and deliver, both with each other and with their potential customers. Connecting with today’s consumer encompasses critical considerations. Not the least of which is connecting sensorially. Skin treatment products must not just perform; they must engage upon application. Offering consumers the texture that they truly like is paramount to business success. Chasing a benchmark can waste time and energy. Furthermore, if a tactile match is achieved, on what basis will the new product be competitive? In our fast-paced and hypercompetitive skincare marketplace, this creates many challenges, but also opportunities for formulators.

Emulsifiers are the major component in formulations to deliver the texture. Selecting the right emulsifier is challenging and it can take time and resources without the guarantee of getting what was envisioned. In today’s marketplace, a new approach is desired. The Adaptive Aesthetic top-down Approach offers an alternative path.

In work done by Mark Chandler, ACT Solutions Corp, in conjunction with Sharon Personal Care, a unique palette of 15 bases was developed to present a comprehensive range of textures, from serums, to lotions, to creams to choose from. Four different emulsifiers with specific targeted specs towards naturality were used to create these varied textures. After testing by targeted panelists focusing on the texture and selection of the one they really like, the selected texture can be fine-tuned by formulators with preservation, actives, and fragrance.

This top-down approach provides formulators with the most effective path to skin care product development allowing for swift access to market while delivering the desired sensorially experience.
