Whenever a given scent was first introduced, that’s how far back in our memories it can take us. This is something to bear in mind, especially as consumers try a product for the first time.
Oral Care
Compass—Collective Interests
This edition examines oral care formulas to address erosion and sensitivity with an article by Faller. Also, Rigano discusses the components of toothpaste and their functions. New findings in naturals and sun care are also always of interest, and in this issue, Tooley et al. describe a water-based titanium dioxide dispersion for natural UV protection. Finally, Becker et al. present a time-saving method to pre-evaluate filler pigments for soft focus effects.

Comparatively Speaking: SPF vs. FEF
Here, industry expert Tony O'Lenick asks Thomas O'Lenick, PhD, to explain the difference between SPF and FEF, including a discussion on how a formulator can adjust the formulation for higher SPF and FEF with the same amount of actives.
Sun Protection
Comparatively Speaking: SPF and Calculated SPF
In order to prepare the industry for the upcoming Sunscreen Symposium, organized by the Florida chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, industry expert Tony O’Lenick asks Dennis Lott to explain the difference between SPF and calculated SPF. This is the first of two columns on sun protection.

Novel Azobenzene Compound to Extend and Reactivate UV Protection
Two azobenzene compounds were synthesized and combined in liposomal membranes. Their physico-chemical properties and biocompatibility were evaluated. The safer one was chosen, and its protective function for UVA and UVB were tested in vitro and in vivo. This azobenzene liposomal formulation provided good efficacy with longer shelf life, which could be utilized as a novel kind of repeated UV absorber.
