New technologies have been designed to carry drugs and natural molecules in a targeted manner across the skin into the dermis, circulatory system or muscles for safer and more efficacious treatments. Joseph Gabriele, PhD, of McMaster University and Delivra Inc., has been at the forefront of this research. During the Cosmetics & Toiletries Summit, held June 26-27, 2014, at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, his presentation will detail how transdermal routes of delivery can be used to deliver beneficial water-soluble molecules such as vitamin C, ubiquinol, flavonoids and anti-carcinogen tumerones across the skin for personal care applications, achieving both efficacy and safety.
The use of such technologies, which can penetrate ingredients deeply through the skin, can reduce the ingredient concentrations necessary in formulations, further increasing product safety and efficacy—as well as expanding the range of molecules that can be used, improving existing products and innovating new ones. The presentation of these and other concepts during the C&T Summit is made possible, in part, through the support of sponsors.
About Gabriele
Gabriele is currently assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at McMaster University, and Chief Scientific Officer of Delivra Inc. His interests include the molecular biology aspects of mental illness, specifically schizophrenia and autism. Gabriele's laboratory has been working on biological markers implicated in psychosis using molecular biology techniques. In relation, he led the development of a transdermal delivery platform that can be tailored to carry drugs across the skin and into the dermis, circulatory system or muscles. In 2007, he received the International Congress on Schizophrenia Research “Young Investigator Award,” and in 2008, the Hamilton Health Sciences “New Investigator Award.”
