Symrise has announced updated research of its SymReboot L19 (INCI: Maltodextrin (and) Lactobacillus Ferment) ingredient as a solution for sensitive and dry scalp conditions.

SymReboot L19 improves dry scalp conditions and promotes a healthy scalp microbiome. Symrise tested and substantiated these benefits in an in vivo study in which volunteers suffering from dry, sensitive, itchy and flaky scalps used a shampoo containing 0.5% SymReboot L19 or a placebo.

After washing every other day for 14 days, users of the shampoo containing the active reported a visible decrease in flakes and scalp itching, along with improvements with the scalp's condition and its visual effects.

After 28 days, the shampoo was found to support a shift in the balance of the scalp microbiome by maintaining the level of Staphylococcus and increasing the level of Cutibacterium, while the opposite was found for the placebo shampoo.

According to Symrise, researchers have succeeded in maintaining the bacterial structure throughout the manufacturing process, thus preserving important probiotic benefits.

Hair care manufacturers can use the technology in a range of products including shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, hair lotions and pre-shampoos.

“The skin cells recognize the cell wall or metabolites of the mildly heat-treated microorganisms, thus activating the scalp’s natural defense mechanisms and thereby soothing the scalp and fortifying its barrier,” said Léa Schmidt, global product manager actives at Symrise. “This makes SymReboot L19 the solution to support dry, flaky scalp recovery.”
