
Founded in 2019 with a $100K seed investment from an Uber passenger, Debut is now one of the biggest names in genomics and biotechnology for beauty innovation. In less than a decade, the company was named on several illustrious lists, including Time100, Vogue Business and Entrepreneur of the Year.
The core of Debut’s success comes from its proprietary biotechnology platform, used to produce natural ingredients for the cosmetic and personal care industries. The platform uses generative ingredient prediction to screen over 96 billion ingredients and test them against over 30,000 genes. The result is a faster, more accurate innovation pipeline, ensuring that formulators can use the latest and greatest ingredients.
Cosmetics & Toiletries spoke with chief executive officer Joshua Britton about Debut’s success and how biotechnology is reshaping the future of beauty.
Can you explain the significance of understanding skin/hair at the genomic level?
At Debut, a genomic-level understanding of skin allows us to identify the precise biological pathways associated with skin health, including markers of cellular dysfunction such as downregulated pathways or overexpressed inflammatory genes. We then develop ingredients designed to address these underlying biological drivers rather than simply masking them, shifting the beauty industry away from short-term cosmetic fixes and toward preventative, biology-based interventions.
Our in-house platform, BeautyORB, built on nearly two billion skin genomic data points, analyzes gene expression within specific cell types. This enables us to see which genes are being upregulated or downregulated and map those changes to the biological changes they control. By understanding how these pathways influence skin function, we can develop higher-performing solutions with greater precision and efficacy.
How is biotechnology acting as a game-changer in the beauty industry?
By targeting the biological pathways that underlie skin function, biotechnology is shifting the beauty industry from reactive treatment to proactive skin health management. Biotechnology is also fundamentally transforming how beauty ingredients are discovered and developed. Historically, peptide and protein design was limited to what could be extracted from nature. Today, thanks to AI, genomics and biotechnology, we are pushing past those limits and creating novel molecules with superior performance that were previously out of reach. What biotech did for pharma, Debut is now doing for beauty: leveraging pharma-grade R&D infrastructure, combined with AI, genomics and biotechnology, to design and scale entirely new molecules with specific, targeted biological performance.
What categories/applications are you collaborating with most? Any surprises?
We're currently focused on skincare, body care, hair care and color cosmetics – categories that are uniquely positioned to benefit from a deeper understanding of human biology. While skincare has been our main focus, there is a rapidly growing interest in biology-driven innovation across the entire beauty industry. Looking ahead, we believe the convergence of AI and biotechnology extends far beyond beauty – into food, health, and any category where performance matters. The speed at which our platform identifies novel ingredients has exceeded even our own expectations – compressing discovery timelines from years to weeks.
Is there a specific ingredient that you think acts as a case study for Debut's success?
DermCeutical EDL shows what AI-driven discovery and biotechnology can deliver in terms of clinical outcomes. By targeting autophagy, the body's natural cellular recycling process, EDL helps optimize skin function at the cellular level. The ingredient stimulates dermal fibroblasts to boost elastin, the key skin scaffolding protein essential for firmness. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study, 100% of participants showed improvement in fine lines, 78% showed improvement in skin elasticity, and 73% showed a reduction in skin sagging.
AI is becoming a bit of a monolithic term. What makes your AI platform unique?
To date, we have seen little evidence of AI in beauty. Much of it is machine learning or using tools such as Claude to give some outputs. At Debut, with our focus on AI for science, we are compressing thousands of years of biological discovery in months. Instead of starting with a naturally occurring molecule and hoping it works, or one derived from traditional chemistry, we begin with a specific biological pathway, such as those tied to skin longevity or barrier repair, and design ingredients to precisely target it. We can screen billions of molecular structures, identify the precise biological pathways we want to activate, and engineer molecules with targeted mechanisms that would never have been possible through conventional means.
We are unlocking parts of the molecular world that were previously unreachable – and in record time – which means the next generation of biotech-derived ingredients will not just outperform what exists today, they will be unlike anything that has come before. This exact transformation happened in pharma from the late 70s, and it has redefined what medicine can do. The drugs that have come to market over the past few years would have been unimaginable decades ago. We are at that same point of transition in beauty. The ingredients that will define the next decade of skincare are being engineered right now. Debut is at the frontier.
Are there any untapped categories/markets that you would like to explore with this technology?
Our current pipeline is focused on cellular longevity and high potency/low concentration ingredients that reinvent legacy molecules, deliver superior performance and meet emerging regulatory standards. We are also developing topical skincare ingredients with professional-level efficacy that bring medspa-grade results to at-home use. Our recent partnership with Natura, the Brazilian multinational and Latin America leader in beauty, to commercialize an AI-discovered longevity ingredient for Latin America demonstrates that even the most established leaders in natural beauty are turning to AI-driven biotechnology to power their next generation of product innovation. Looking ahead, we see significant opportunity in understanding differences in skin biology not only across skin types, but also across age, sex, geography, diet, and the microbiome, helping brands build around personalization at the molecular level.
We know consumers are concerned with sustainability in their products. Can you explain how this platform meets sustainability goals?
Biotech is inherently sustainable. It eliminates agricultural land use and supply chain dependencies on natural crops and botanicals. Compared to traditional plant extraction, a fermentation tank uses a fraction of water and land and runs on renewable feedstocks with no pesticides and minimal waste. Our platform provides end-to-end traceability from genome to finished ingredients. This level of transparency creates an accountability layer that sustainability-focused consumers increasingly expect but rarely receive. Sustainability is built into our processes, from start to finish.
Debut was named by Vogue Business as one of the startups shaping the future of beauty. What does that future look like to you, and how is Debut helping achieve that?
Over the next decade, the beauty industry won’t simply be an improved version of what we know. It will shift from incremental gains to performance leaps, defined by biology-driven design and precise molecular function. This isn’t an evolution of the industry; it’s a new industrial era redefined by what’s possible rather than what’s always been done. The boundaries between beauty, pharma, and nutrition are increasingly blurring, and the current set of active ingredients will be replaced by molecules with yet-to-be-imagined functionality. Their names may be unfamiliar today, but their clinically validated performance will speak for itself. With AI, high-fidelity datasets and vertical integration, Debut intends to make these innovations accessible to brands globally, from large multinationals to emerging brands.
