According to Yuki Muneyoshi, of POLA Chemical Industries, many consumers are dissatisfied with foundations that look unnatural upon application. As a formulator, the challenge is to provide coverage and a natural finish simultaneously, which is difficult to achieve.

However, in a study presented during the IFSCC 2020 Congress, Muneyoshi explained that conventional foundation development focuses on powder that imitates the optical properties of bare skin, which does not consider the observer’s perception of the powder on skin. His work sought to balance both coverage and a natural finish in a manner inspired by oil painting on a canvas, rather than techniques measuring the optical properties of powder formulations on skin.
