Sometimes it is okay to take the easy route in formulation. Whether that stems from a simplified ingredient list or using tried and true methods that have been proven time and again to work, overcomplicating an idea may only lead to further confusion and failed tests.
As of the summer of 2023, short ingredient lists are popular with consumers. They allow for the consumer to quickly learn what is in a product and feel educated on it, whether that is true or not. Yet in formulating there are many additional methods that go into the process, one of which being o/w and w/o emulsions.
o/w emulsions are often lighter on the skin and easier to wash off, but do not provide the same level of protection as w/o. Aside from the characteristics of each method, they are both longtime industry standards, with emulsion itself dating back to potentially 8500 BC.
