Clean labeling, to some consumers, means products omitting given "undesired" ingredients; D5 (or cyclopentasiloxane) could be considered one of these. Responding to this driver, AB Specialty Silicones launched D5-free emulsifiers during in-cosmetics North America.

Andisil SP 2318 (INCI: Dimethicone (and) PEG/PPG-18/18 Dimethicone) and SP2318C, its 50% concentrate, were developed due to growing environmental safety concerns over cyclopentasiloxane. The emulsifiers are D5-free and designed to offer similar performance while avoiding pending regulatory issues.

Applied in w/o and w/s skin care systems, the emulsifiers are reportedly easy to use and offer flexible manufacturing capabilities, including cold-processability. They meet the need for superior aesthetics and the effective delivery of active ingredients.

Further, according to the company, they add the desirable benefits of hydrating and moisturizing properties, to combat dry skin. The emulsifiers also thicken the end product and can help keep overall formulation costs down.

The new silicone emulsifiers are recommended for use in skin care, antiperspirant and deodorants, and color cosmetics. For more information, visit the company website.
