Lighten Skin with Spec-Chem’s SpecKare GSH

SpecKare GSH (INCI: Glutathione) is an ingredient of natural origin developed by biological fermentation. Tested for safety in vitro/in vivo, it has been shown to protect mitochondria from oxidative damage; lighten and whiten skin; boost the antioxidant effect of vitamins C and E; fight inflammation; and detoxify skin—all in a water-soluble format for formulation flexibility.

As a non-protein sulfhydryl compound in the body, glutathione mainly has two forms of reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG). The ingredient is a reduced form of glutathione due to proper the proper ratio of GSH-to-GSSG. The antioxidant function of GSH contributes to the skin lightening and whitening properties because the antioxidant agent prevents the production of melanin reducing by ROS. Since GSH is an inhibitor of melanin, it is widely utilized in skin whitening soaps. Its antioxidant properties protect cells from reactive oxygen species, such as free radicals and peroxides.

To test the ingredient’s safety, an Ames test was performed using Salmonella typhimurium/Reverse Mutation Assay on Strain: TA 97a, TA98, TA100 and TA102. As a result, no positive results were found with all the test strains in the presence and absence of a metabolic activation system.

In vivo, the ingredient was diluted to 10% with distilled water and applied to 30 volunteers in a patch test on the subjects’ backs. After 24 hr, the patches were removed and dermatologists observed irritation reactions after 30 min, 24 hr and 48 hr. Results were recorded according to the "skin’s adverse reaction grading standard," in STSC. In conclusion, none of the subjects had an adverse reaction after the patch test, ensuring the ingredient’s safety.
