The ingredient is extracted from the fruit husks of Zanthoxylum bungeanum, or Sichuan pepper, using supercritical CO2. It reportedly acts on neuromuscular communication within the skin structure, providing well-aging effects and soothing benefits depending on its concentration in formulas.

Clinical Efficacy

The active demonstrated efficacy in several clinical studies.

  • At a low dosage (0.5%), Zanthalene reduced skin discomfort such as itching and sensitivity by bringing a soothing effect to the skin in only a few minutes.
  • At a higher dosage (1.0%), Zanthalene showed a visible reduction in skin roughness in only 30 min, and long-term efficacy over 30 days. The company notes this indicates users respond to the active even after regular use, creating a virtuous circle of amelioration.

Considering these results, the active can be used in formulations targeting tired, skin for a refreshed look with a quick and visible effect.

Application

According to the company, consumers are ready to purchase anti-aging concepts that are formulated with Botox-like active ingredients. Therefore, Givaudan designed Sensilift, which features Zanthalene. Also powered by Vetivyne (INCI: Vetiveria Zizanoides Root Extract (and) Propanediol (and) Water (Aqua)), Centerox (INCI: Madecassoside (and) Asiaticoside) and rose seed oil to regenerate and plump the skin, this natural well-aging cream is additionally enriched with Jambu to energize the skin and provide a boosting, hydrating, comforting and soothing effect.

"Each facial expression activates a large number of muscles,” said Giada Maramaldi, personal care category manager of Givaudan. “With time and the decrease of collagen production, these expressions become even more marked and embedded on the skin, leading to the formation of wrinkles. To fight against these effects, Zanthalene offers a neurocosmetic strategy, enabling facial muscle relaxation in a safe, reversible and natural way, adding a sensation of comfort while removing skin discomfort."
