Throughout 2017, Cosmetics & Toiletries will feature an all-new “Supplier Roundtable” series to discuss solutions to formulating issues. This month, experts were challenged with: How to formulate care and protect hand creams.
A report from Mintel on hand, body and foot care in the U.K. touches on the consumer standpoint of protecting skin:
“Consumers are growing bored due to less innovation and advertising spend in hand, body and foot care,” said Alex Fisher, senior beauty analyst. “The prestige sector should copy professional treatments as the trade down from premium to mass brands accelerates, or partner with fashion and social media. Basic consumers care about skin comfort and relief. Brands can win by talking up simple claims and offering greater transparency.”
Shawn Brown, Application Lab Manager, Personal Care, Gattefossé USA
When it comes to consumer’s skin care regimen most are concerned with taking care of their face and other specific aspects such as the eyes and lips. The hands are often overlooked, but are exposed to the same conditions as our face on a daily basis. They are used all the time and are often unprotected from pollution, sun light and other daily factors that can dehydrate and weaken the skin. Formulating products, which can protect the hands from environmental stressors, while still being esthetically pleasing is quite challenging, but not impossible.
Oil in water emulsions stabilized with Emulium Mellifera (INCI: Polyglyceryl-6 Distearate (and) Jojoba Esters (and) Polyglyceryl-3 Beeswax (and) Cetyl Alcohol) are clinically proven to provide long term moisture and improve the appearance of the skin. The low residual film created by Emulium Mellifera is never greasy on the skin and will protect from particulate matter caused by pollution. It also easily stabilizes UV filters, which are essential for hand protection.
For anhydrous formulations, Acticire (INCI: Jojoba Esters (and) Acacia Decurrens Flower Wax (and) Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Wax (and) Polyglycerin-3) is a unique wax butter that helps protect against TEWL and increases water levels in the skin. The amphiphilic nature of Acticire allows for the introduction of hydrophilic actives into anyhydrous systems.
For direct activity on age spots caused by UV exposure, Gatuline Spot-light (INCI: Butylene Glycol (and) Actinidia Chinensis (Kiwi) Fruit Water (and) Alcohol (and) Sophora Flavescens Root Extract) is clinically proven to reduce the size, quantity and intensity of age spots on the skin. It protects the skin from oxidation and harmful enzymes, while also exfoliating. To improve the overall health of the hands Gatuline Renew (INCI name: Butylene Glycol (and) Water (and) Cryptomeria Japonica Bud Extract) acts specifically on the skin’s texture to hydrate, smooth and soften the skin.

One of the most under-reported areas of concern is the hand. Our hands are highly visible and will show our age, even as you take care to use anti-aging products for your face. Take control of your age by taking care of your hands.
Jeen developed two formulations in response to the recent trend of natural products and they deliver a high level of moisture as well as nutrients for the skin. They both form a light, breathable non-greasy film on the skin and dry quickly, so you can get back to your daily life.
Jeen’s Natural Hand Renewal Cream delivers lots of moisture and nutrients featuring Jeesperse CPW-S (INCI: Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Wax (and) Sodium Polyacrylate), which forms a protective barrier on the skin. Despite its heavy oil/butter/squalane load, this formulation feels light and not greasy at all, imparting a luxuriously light and powdery feel. This oil in water formulation is mostly natural, 79% water and is a cold process formulation, leading to lower manufacturing costs. This is truly an economical formulation disguised as a high-end luxury one.
Jeen’s Soft Body Butter formulation is a body butter, nourishing the skin with natural oils, cocoa butter and shea butter without feeling greasy or heavy. It cannot be compared to typical creams because it is light and non-greasy. The Jeesperse ICE-TTM CIS-2 (INCI: PEG-150 Distearate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol (and) Polyquaternium-37) builds viscosity and cushion into this economical formulation while imparting a soft powdery end feel. The BP-Biopeptides and Vitamin E heal and repair dry, damaged skin by promoting cell growth and cytotoxicity, while the Jeechem HPIB (INCI: Cyclopentasiloxane (and) Hydrogenated Polyisobutene (and) Dimethicone Crosspolymer-3) adds luxury and slip making it feel like a luxurious product.
