A Look at Lipids
As Pappas explained in 2021, lipids produced by the epidermal cells are a mixture of long chain ceramides, free fatty acids and cholesterol. They represent a minor fraction of the total extractable surface lipids on areas rich in sebaceous glands. Lipids of epidermal origin seal the stratified corneocytes on the stratum corneum in a relationship similarly to the "mortar" in the brick-and-mortar skin structure model.
Sebaceous lipids, on the other hand, are mainly non-polar triglycerides, wax esters and squalene. They are secreted as sebum due to the holocrine activity of the sebaceous gland and eventually released to the top of the skin, where they coat the surface, as well as hair shafts. The composition of sebaceous lipids is exceptional — e.g., sapienic acid and its metabolites plus the wax esters—and rather intriguing because they are not found anywhere else in the human body. Furthermore, elevated sebum excretion is a major factor involved in the pathophysiology of acne.
Roles besides acne have been uncovered in the literature regarding the effects of surface lipids on normal skin functions, including in dry or atopic skin. In addition, differences with regards to ethnicity and age have been highlighted.
Vaseline Intensive Care Almond Smooth Lotion
Vaseline's dermatologist-tested body lotion is formulated with almond oil and vitamin E, whose "ultra-hydrating" lipids fortify the skin barrier to replenish moisture for a smooth and natural glow.
The fast-drying, non-greasy lotion is said to provide 90% more moisture than untreated skin. While it can be used daily to deeply nourish dry, rough skin, it also offers 48-hr moisture.
The package features a recyclable bottle and pump, and the bottle is made using 50% recycled plastic.
User Feedback: Vaseline Intensive Care Almond Smooth Lotion
Following are example user reviews (edited for style), selected for their anecdotal insights on product form and function. Note that as with many products, the feedback posted on the company website is mixed.
- It has a lovely smell and absorbs quickly. It doesn’t leave an oily feeling -- just soft and moisturized.
- As I am getting older and dealing with medical challenges that seem to dry my skin, I am always looking for the best solutions. This lotion applies well and does not bead up, not too perfumed and seems to be keeping my skin moisturized all day without having to reapply.
- It's an average-thickness lotion that glides on and absorbs well into my skin. My skin is left feeling hydrated and smells wonderful. The almond scent is very light.
- This lotion leaves skin so soft and smooth. I love how it repairs my skin. My skin was feeling old and leathery with a dry, cracked feeling that was painful at times. But this lotion took that all away.
