Beiersdorf Hacks the Skin Age Clock with Epicelline-powered Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler Epigenetic Serum

Rejuvenating epigenetic skin care has been a key industry target for the better part of the last decade. Now, Beiersdorf claims to have hacked the skin's age clock with its new rejuvenating Eucerin  Hyaluron-Filler Epigenetic Serum, featuring Epicelline, an ingredient technology that reverses the signs of aging by reactivating "youth genes."

What is Eucerin's Epicelline Hero Ingredient?

Epicelline was developed amid Beiersdorf’s epigenetic research, which kicked off 16 years ago.

In that work, Beiersdorf scientists reportedly analyzed skin samples from more than 1,000 people, including the measurement of 850,000 methylation sites to understand which epigenetic markers were associated with skin aging.

The work led to the identification of  a "skin-specific age clock." This involved the development of an algorithm that can assess genetic information, particularly the pattern of methylation in human genetic material, to determine biologically how old a cell is and how that compares to the corresponding person's chronological age.

This skin age clock was used to assess the effectiveness of materials on skin aging. During Beiersdorf research, some 50,000 substances and extracts were tested to identify active ingredients with skin rejuvenating potential.

This led to the validation of Epicelline, which "turns back the age clock of skin cells and reverses signs of aging," per the company.

Turning Back the Skin Age Clock by 5 Years

By reactivating youth genes that have been "silenced" during the aging process and exposure to stress, UV and other lifestyle factors, Epicelline imparts a strong anti-aging response via a reversal of DNA methylation.

The effects of this reversal on the skin include:

  • increased firmness
  • a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles
  • a lifting effect
  • improved facial contours
  • overall rejuvenation

The result, per Vincent Warnery, CEO of Beiersdorf, is a technology that "makes people look up to five years younger."

The Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler Epigenetic Serum pairs its hero ingredient with hyaluronic acid, glycine saponin and enoxolone,

“The development of our patented skin-specific age clock technology and the active ingredient Epicelline represent the culmination of more than 15 years of research in the field of epigenetics," says Gitta Neufang, Ph.D., corporate senior vice president research and development at Beiersdorf."

Neufang adds, “The skin-specific age clock helps us find novel skin care solutions that make people look younger than they really are. Leveraging our scientific expertise in the field of epigenetics, our goal is not only to improve single functionalities of aged skin cells, but to fundamentally rejuvenate skin cells."
