Image Processing and Analysis to Evaluate the Effects of Porous Polyamide Microspheres in Cosmetics
Described here is an image processing system that compensates for changes in illumination and volunteer position, and two algorithms to quantify skin texture and wrinkles. These methods evaluate skin parameters from a single image without contacting skin. Their abilities are demonstrated here in evaluations of the benefits of porous polyamide ultra-fine powders on skin texture and gloss.

to Regulate ‘Youth Gene Clusters’—An In vitro Analysis
A blend of
Narcissus tazetta
bulb and
Schizandra chinensis
fruit extracts was developed for anti-aging benefits and tested for efficacy on a human skin equivalent. Results indicate it regulates the functions of youth gene clusters by increasing the activities found in younger skin and reducing the activities found in aging skin specific to structure, hydration, cellular proliferation and pigmentation.

Cosmetic Safety: Public Perception and Scientific Reality
As far as the public is concerned, hypothetical risks are real. And if anyone studies a chemical in depth, they can find some effect but whether it should be removed from the market comes down to a risk-benefit analysis. Cosmetic formulation is a continuous process of keeping in step with research, and when a true risk emerges, addressing it.

Comparatively Speaking: Complexation vs. Coacervation in 2-in-1 Shampoos
Hair care traditionally involves cleansing with anionic or amphoteric surfactants, rinsing, then using a conditioner with cationic surfactant and cetyl and stearyl alcohol. Combining these as 2-in-1 products is not easy but complexation and coacervation approaches can achieve such.

Silicone Safety and the Cosmetic Industry
The use of silicones in personal care products continues to expand because of the unique performance attributes they provide and their well-established record of safety. As a result, progressively larger volumes of silicones are being released to the environment, and interest in their life cycle has increased. The present article summarizes relevant fundamental chemical and physical properties of silicones and how these relate to material performance, safety and environmental fate.
