Emotion, Visualization and Innovation at IFSCC in Rio
The IFSCC conference covered an array of subjects—from the psychology of rotating brushes, and discussion of neuron-adipocyte crosstalk to limit emotional stress-mediated fat accumulation; to hair straightening and conditioning, various visualization tools, and novel formulation approaches.

Shielding and Repairing Tooth Enamel with Carboxymethyl Cellulose
This article evaluates the ability of a toothpaste formulation containing calcium, phosphate and a film-building carboxymethyl cellulose to repair and refill damaged enamel. Micro-hardness and elasticity were quantified by nano-indentation, and surface roughness by profilometry. Scanning electron microscopy was employed for qualitative analysis, and profilometry, again, for the refilling of micro damage.

Assessing Beauty By Facial Topography, Color and Symmetry
The notion of “aging gracefully” no longer applies, as consumers are constantly judging each other’s facial features to assess their beauty. Here, based on recent studies, it is suggested that facial topography, symmetry and color dictate those assessments. While the cosmetics industry can lessen some of these factors, some are a result of biology or lifestyle.

Correlating Aging with Skin’s Mechanical and Optical Properties
The aim of this study was to monitor the evolution of biomechanical and optical properties of the skin with aging. Different biophysical parameters were measured, including skin: elasticity and firmness, color, brightness, fluorescence emission, sebum content, hydration and pH. A significant evolution of the evaluated parameters with aging was observed.

Ensure the Consistency and Quality of Your Products
Particle size distribution can have a major effect on the characteristics desired for a given application or objective, or on the performance and quality of a final product. Shimadzu’s multi-purpose SALD-2300 particle size analyzer provides the accuracy and reproducibility needed for QA and R&D applications related to lipstick, conditioners, creams and other cosmetics.

Bioiberica’s Dermial Nutricosmetic Outperforms Extracted and Fermented HAs
A pre-clinical in vitro study showed the Dermial hyaluronic acid (HA) matrix nutricosmetic increased type I collagen production by almost half. According to Bioiberica, this has not been seen with standard extracted or fermented HAs.

Topical Antioxidant and Silymarin Serum Improves Facial Acne
After four weeks of product use, subjects showed statistically significant improvement in skin clarity, skin tone evenness and PIH/PIE which continued to improve through week 12.

Chocolate and Wine: The Perfect Match for Skin?
The
International Journal of Molecular Sciences
had us at "hello" this month, with a new study comparing the phenolic compounds in chocolate (actually, cocoa by-products) vs. wine (okay, grape seed) extracts for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory skin benefits.

[podcast] Microbiome Interactions and Skin Health, Part I
New research from Amway and Microbiome Insights underlines the connections between skin health and the microbiome. In a new podcast series, Greg Hillebrand, Ph.D., and Malcolm Kendall share what they've learned.

ICCVAM Recommends Ocular Safety Tests for Cosmetics and Other Products
Four test method evaluation reports are now available from ICCVAM that provide recommendations for performing eye safety testing more humanely, and for developing and using non-animal test methods and strategies. Among these reports, ICVAAM has recommended that a cytosensor microphysiometer (CM) test method may be used to screen surfactant-containing formulations such as personal care products for the ability to cause permanent or severe eye injuries.

California and Canada Move to End Animal Testing for Cosmetics
The final outcomes of these moves remain to be seen, but one thing is certain: not every market is on the same page. This could either spell out a larger drive for global harmony or settle into irreconcilable differences.

Keratin Blend Anchors Follicles and Prevents Pollution-induced Hair Fall
Poor scalp health compromises hair quality. As such, the topical application of keratins was explored to increase collagen IV in the scalp skin. Live scalp explants were used to test this approach for improved follicle anchoring and, in turn, protection against environmental assault, hair fall and damage.

Mature and Immature Corneocyte Detection Force Distance Curves vs. Microfluorometry
Here, the author compares two methods to determine the maturity of corneocytes based on their cross-linking that could be used to evaluate the anti-aging effects of molecular agents. The first utilizes microfluorometry, while the second involves F-D curves generated via contact mode AFM. Both methods successfully detected differences in mature or immature corneocytes with 95% confidence.

Alphorns, Cowbells, Magic and Gaming at IFSCC Zurich, part V
The 23rd IFSCC Congress, held Sept. 21-23, 2015, reported “more facts and less illusions” to some 550+ delegates from across the globe at the forefront of cosmetic product innovation.

Patent Picks—Suprametallogels, Detecting Analytes, Vibroturbilization and Other R&D Processes
Patent Picks are compiled by the editors from publicly available sources. This edition features inventions related to processes and methods of forming suprametallogels, synthesizing stable resveratrol, detecting target analytes, surface-treating calcium carbonate, processing dispersed systems, enhancing dermal penetration, temporarily dyeing hair and more.

Two Key Factors in Hair Care Growth: Mass and Efficacy
Value growth in hair care has been hampered by an upwardly inelastic value margin. However, there is hope in untapped zones in emerging markets, where the frequency of shampoo use continues to be low.

Interpretation of SPF In vivo Results: Analysis and Statistical Explanation
Methods for determining SPF in vivo are based on a biological response by human skin. To overcome intrinsic variation in these methods, large numbers of volunteers and statistics are required; however, these concepts are often poorly understood or worse, misinterpreted. This article discusses how these values should be interpreted and explains what they mean to formulators.

Alternatives to Animal Testing: A Review of Trends and Perspectives
Alternative test methods have the potential to reduce animal testing; however, the extent to which in vitro methods can be replaced is questionable. This article summarizes validated alternatives to test the safety of cosmetic ingredients. It also illustrates how great a challenge it is to devise a proper alternative method.
