Penetration of Cosmetics Into and Through the Stratum Corneum
The penetration routes of substances through the stratum corneum and how these transport pathways function are becoming better understood. Despite this progress, however, the penetration mechanisms of cosmetic formulations remain mysterious. This overview presents current knowledge on the various pathways of penetration, and suggests that even if cosmetic formulations penetrate no deeper than the surface, their efficacy may still be optimal.

Formulating Focus: The Influence of Emollients on Skin Penetration
This column will discuss ways in which ingredients can positively affect the partition coefficient of the active between the formula and the skin. By carefully selecting the emollients used in a formulation, formulators can increase the delivery and clinical efficacy of a formulation without increasing the level of the active ingredient.

Assessing the Safety of Parabens: Percutaneous Penetration and Risk Analysis
In cosmetics, parabens are widely used due to their low cost and efficacy. In recent years, however, some reports have claimed that these materials exhibit estrogenic activity, which has led to attempts to replace them in formulations. This article reviews penetration studies of parabens spanning the past 20 years to determine whether they pose a risk to human health.
