Reducing UV-induced skin thickening
WIPO Patent Application WO/2015/013709
Publication date: Jan 29, 2015
Assignee: Galderma Research & Development

Described herein are methods, compositions and products for treating or reducing skin thickening and related skin disorders induced by UV irradiation. The methods involve topically administering to the subject a composition containing an a adrenergic receptor agonist, such as brimonidine.

Skin lipid formulations for epidermal repair and balance
WIPO Patent Application WO/2015/013634
Publication date: Jan. 29, 2015
Assignee: CE Eberting

This patent discloses dermatological formulations for repairing and restoring a disrupted epidermal barrier, inhibiting inflammation, restoring and maintaining a balanced symbiotic microbiome, and inhibiting the growth of pathogenic microorganisms in the epidermis. Specifically, the formulations include a combination of essential skin lipid species that are often deficient in disrupted skin. In addition, they exclude lipid species found to be in excess in diseased skin. The formulations also provide components designed to establish and maintain an appropriate calcium gradient within the skin so as to induce the viable epidermis to synthesize and secrete the lipids, and particularly ceramides, that comprise the lamellar phases crucial in establishing an intact, effective epidermal barrier.

Optical imaging of skin disease
WIPO Patent Application WO/2015/013288
Publication date: Jan. 29, 2015
Assignee: The Rockefeller University

The present invention employs algorithms with greater sensitivity, specificity and overall diagnostic accuracy to evaluate image data obtained from reflecting light off of skin lesions. It can be used to produce diagnostically relevant quantitative metrics in real time. Combining a dermatoscope, digital camera and automated screening by computer vision, the invention is said to bridge the diagnostic accuracy gap between invasive and noninvasive pathological analyses. In particular, it acquires images of a lesion on a subject's skin at different wavelengths and utilizes a sweeping arm rotating about the lesion in a clock-like direction to produce diagnostically relevant metrics and classifiers from the image data so as to enhance detection of the skin disease.

Malva neglecta for skin barrier, acne
WIPO Patent Application WO/2015/013286
Publication date: Jan. 29, 2015
Assignee: Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc.

These inventors describe the topical application of a composition incorporating Malva neglecta extract to increase ceramide production and treat acne. Additionally, the composition may include cholesterol. In a preferred embodiment, the Malva neglecta is extracted using hexane as a solvent. The inventors have determined that the more non-polar the extract, the more activity and ceramide production induced by the application of Malva neglecta to skin cells.

Amino silicone nanoemulsion for cleansing applications
WIPO Patent Application WO/2015/013248
Publication date: Jan. 29, 2015
Assignee: The Procter & Gamble Company

The present invention relates to amino silicone nanoemulsions to protect surfaces from being soiled or wetted for applications including fabric care, dish cleaning, beauty care, personal care and more. In certain aspects, the treatment composition comprises from about 0.001% to 15% w/w of the amino silicone nanoemulsion.

Microbiome characterization, monitoring and treatment
WIPO Patent Application WO/2015/013214
Publication date: Jan. 29, 2015
Assignee: Whole Biome, Inc.

According to this invention, despite the awareness of the connection between microbiomes and health, the complexity of the microbiome and difficulties in categorizing and characterizing the constituents of it have made understanding these relationships challenging. Consequently, these challenges present hurdles in the development of diagnostic and therapeutic applications. In response, this patent describes methods for profiling a microbiome and therapeutic compositions for treatment. Additionally, methods, systems, compositions and kits are provided to assess or predict the health status of a subject.

Low-active, high-SPF UV compositions
WIPO Patent Application WO/2015/013198
Publication date: Jan. 29, 2015
Assignee: The Procter & Gamble Company

There exists an ongoing need to find the optimal blend of ingredients and actives to develop new skin care compositions that have superior qualities over existing formulae. As such, described here is a UV composition that contains from about 0.2% to 2% of a UV stabilizer that is an alpha-cyanodiphenylacrylate. Further, the UV composition comprises from about 1.5% to 3.5% of butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, and 3% to about 9% of 2-ethylhexyl-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-enoate. A dermatologically acceptable carrier is also provided.

Stable, high salt-containing skin care compositions
WIPO Patent Application WO/2015/013197
Publication date: Jan. 29, 2015
Assignee: The Procter & Gamble Company

As noted by these inventors, the instability of high salt-containing emulsions remains an issue even when the water phase is thickened with commercially available thickeners. Thus, described herein is an o/w emulsion that includes greater than ~ 0.5% of the salt form of a neutralized acid, preferably salicylic acid; and from ~ 0.001% to 2% w/w of a gum, preferably xanthan. This emulsion is stable, i.e., substantially unaltered in chemical state and physical homogeneity upon exposure to 14 days at a temperature and humidity of about 50°C and 60% RH. The emulsion may also include from ~ 0.01% to 10% of an emulsifier.
