Assignee: Shiseido Company, Ltd.

This invention relates to the preparation and use of an α-gel intermediate composition for easily and stably preparing a stable o/w emulsion that exhibits little change in viscosity over time.

The α-gel intermediate comprises: 20-80% (by mass %) each of mixture A and B. Mixture A is obtained by mixing, in a molar ratio range of 3:2 to 5:1, at least one higher alcohol having a carbon number of at least 16, and an active anionic surface agent. Mixture B is obtained by mixing, in a mass ratio range of 5:5 to 8:2, at least one water-soluble solvent having an IOB value of 1.5-3.5, and water.

The α-gel-intermediate composition is further characterized in that at temperatures in the range of 65-85˚C, it is a liquid comprising either a bicontinuous microemulsion phase or a bicontinuous microemulsion phase having lamellar liquid crystal dispersed therein. At room temperature, it is a solid.
