The cosmetic applicability of an ethosome gel incorporating the herb Azadirachta indica (neem), which is known for its anti-aging properties, was explored in study published in the International Journal of Drug Discovery & Herbal Research. Here, the authors prepared, characterized and evaluated the gel and its topical delivery of an leaf extract of neem.
Extraction was carried out using ethanol. The gels utilized varied concentrations of carbomer and sodium CMC polymer, optimized for homogeneity, spreadibility and viscosity.
The resulting gel was greenish and translucent in appearance and homogenous, without lumps. One formula in particular had good values for spreadability, viscosity, pH and active ingredient content. In addition, during accelerated stability studies, its appearance remained clear, and no significant variations in spreadability, pH or drug content were observed. The authors concluded the gel holds potential for cosmetic application.
