Hair Control Shaping New Markets

According to research from Diagonal Reports, hair straightening has stirred up today's beauty marketplace much like hair coloring did in the late 1990s. Hair straightening is no longer a one-size-fits-all category, and demand for hair control in general is growing exponentially due to new product introductions, and demographic and lifestyle changes. In relation, new solutions offer flexibility and choice to meet a wider range of global demands.

In his Cosmetics & Toiletries (C&T) Summit presentation, to be held June 22, 2015, at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Peter Landa of Textile Research Institute (TRI) Princeton will revisit the "knowns" about hair structure and styling/control technologies, to determine what chemistries or mechanisms can affect hair shape and behavior. He will then catapult forward by exposing the "unknowns;" i.e., untapped areas where potential lies for changing hair control/shape as we know it, thus creating new targets. This discussion will consider the unique characteristics of ethnic and blended hair, among others, and new approaches for shaping hair.

Landa Biography

Peter A. Landa is currently the director for personal care claims and measurement science at TRI Princeton, a leading independent research institution recognized globally for its contributions to the measurement, development and understanding of technology in personal care, home, textiles, polymers, composites, biomedical, etc., products and substrates. Landa is responsible for third-party claims substantiation, technology development, measurement sciences, and external collaborations with research centers, universities, suppliers and finished goods producers. He has more than 25 years of experience in the personal care industry—all for a variety of different personal care products and brands.

Landa's experience spans pharmaceutical companies, ingredient manufacturers, personal care finished goods companies and testing facilities. He has previously held positions at Croda Inc., Ascendia Brands, National Starch and Chemical (ICI) and Estée Lauder Inc., where he spent more than 14 years in research and development early on in his career. Landa received his bachelor's from Queens College, CUNY, and did post graduate work at the University of Connecticut and Cornell University Medical Center, NY. He also received an MBA in Management from Dowling College in Oakland, NY. Finally, he has co-authored more than 40 articles, papers, presentations and posters, and is an inventor on a number of patents and patent applications for personal care.
