There are so many hair straightening products on the market now that I almost forgot that some people want to maintain their curls! L’Oréal EverCurl Scupt & Hold Cream-Gel combines a rich, hydrating cream that conditions with a styling gel that shapes and holds curls without weighing hair down.

The formula is a lightweight o/w emulsion with glycerin and butylene glycol as the primary humectants. Polyquaternium-69 is hydrophobic, yet water-soluble and predominantly non-ionic with a weakly cationic nature. It provides compatibility with anionic gellant carbomer and thickening and stabilizing polymer sodium acrylate/sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer. The carbomer is neutralized with aminomethyl propanol and triethanolamine. Additional film-formers include Hibiscus esculentus or okra seed extract, which is a lightweight film-former and moisturizer.

Coconut and grape seed oils are the emollients and PEG-12 dimethicone, dimethicone and dimethiconol are the silicone-derived shine agents. Polysorbate 20 and 80 are co-emulsifiers for the fragrance and oils. The bio-active or cosmeceutical ingredient is panthenol, pro-vitamin B5, which is frequently included as a conditioning agent in hair care products.

The preservative system consists of sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin, benzyl benzoate, benzyl alcohol and chlorophenesin. Some of these preservatives may be components of the individual raw materials. The fragrance components are limonene, linalool, Citrus aurantium dulcis (sweet orange) peel oil, butylphenyl methylpropional, coumarin and hexyl cinnamal. Fragrance is also listed. In my opinion, the claims for smooth and hydrated curls are substantiated by the ingredient listing.
