Count to Zen Rejuvenating Hand Cream is an Asia-inspired U.S. product, described as an intensely hydrating, quick absorbing, cream-textured hand treatment with a light, naturally calming fragrance.
Designed primarily for dry hands to help restore lost moisture, the product’s focus is on solutions for dry, chapped skin, cuticle care and softening for feet, heels and elbows. The product claims fast absorption, moisturization and softening of the skin. It also touts being free from parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oil, synthetic colors or fragrances and GMOs.
The product range is presented as non-toxic, plant-based, biodegradable, vegan and gluten-free with organic and natural ingredients that are consciously and sustainably sourced. This column will review the ingredient listing for claims substantiation and functionality.
The formula is a water-in-oil emulsion with caprylic/capric triglyceride as the main emollient and moisturizer. The emollient system contains these emulsifying, emulsion-stabilizing and viscosity-controlling agents: glyceryl stearate, cetearyl alcohol, cetearyl glucoside and cetyl alcohol. The oil phase is enriched with the conditioning and barrier-protective plant lipids of: safflower seed oil, baobab seed oil and shea butter. The formula also contains a silicone, dimethicone, to achieve a lighter sensory feel.
The aqueous phase contains anti-inflammatory, soothing and hydrating Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, the humectants glycerin and xylitol, anti-inflammatory chamomile extract, antioxidant-rich green tea extract and the anti-irritant compound bisabolol. A small amount of kaolin in the formulation supports the calming properties of the hand cream.
Xanthan gum serves as an emulsion stabilizer and gluconolactone, potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate are the preservatives. The formula also contains fragrance.
In this author's view, the product claims are upheld: fast absorption is achieved by the addition of plant oils to this emollient system; moisturization is a function of the emollients and humectants; and soothing/anti-inflammatory ingredients and plant butters bring the benefits of softening and moisturization. The natural origin of the fragrance, however, is not substantiated.
