Bicoalgae XT (INCI: Water (aqua) (and) Lecithin (and) Glycerin (and) Haematococcus Pluvialis Extract (and) Tocopherol (and) Beta-sitosterol (and) Squalene (and) Phytic Acid (and) Sodium Benzoate (and) Potassium Sorbate (and) Citric Acid) provides seven clinically proven anti-aging benefits as well as trending blue light and pollution protection, as shown by ex vivo studies.
Bicoalgae XT is based on the third party Bicosome technology delivery platform, which provides double encapsulation to protect actives as they are delivered to specific skin layers and without damaging the skin. The ingredient contains an algae extract from H. Pluvialis that is rich in astaxanthin, a bioactive that is reportedly claimed to be 65x more powerful than vita min C. It is delivered into the epidermis where it provides anti-aging benefits including wrinkle reduction, improved skin firmness, increased brightness, accelerated cell renewal, increased antioxidant efficacy, reduced lipid peroxidation and decreased TEWL.
To test for blue light protection, skin explants were left untreated or treated with 3% of an ingredient-containing cream and incubated for 30 min with a fluorescent marker (DCFH-DA) that reacts with ROS. Samples were irradiated for 30 min by blue light (λ = 468 nm) and ROS visualization was carried out by optical microscopy using fluorescent filters. Results indicated the ingredient scavenged and neutralized nearly all the generated ROS.
The ingredient also protects against pollution particles absorbing into the skin. Skin explants treated and untreated with a cream containing the ingredient at 3% were tested in a MIVO chamber, whereby the one chamber was loaded with a pollution solution mimicking urban dust and the other chamber was then analyzed for pollutant concentrations. The Pollution Protectant Factor (PPF) values were calculated. Application of the cream containing the ingredient provided protection up to 70% in skin explant studies.
