In a new patent application, PZ Cussons inventors explain how unstructured personal cleansing compositions are challenged to suspend insoluble materials such as hydrophobic oils or waxes, scrub particles or encapsulates. These materials typically sink to the bottom or rise to the top of a formula, depending on their density. As a consequence, such compositions demonstrate low storage stability.
To remedy the situation, structured surfactant systems may be employed or external structurants can be added to the aqueous phase. However, according to these inventors, such attempts rely on aggregate structures formed by surfactants, e.g., parallel sheets or multilamellar vesicles known as spherulites, which require precise combinations of particular surfactants and/or ingredient inducers.
There is thus a need for a personal cleansing composition that overcomes such issues to incorporate insoluble benefit agents—such as particulate exfoliants, encapsulates or oils—in a stable manner for a longer shelf life. This was the focus of the present invention.

Disclosed in this invention are personal cleansing compositions in liquid or gel form for cleansing the skin and hair; particularly for hand, body or face washes. One key feature is their highly structured nature derived from interactions of polymeric and surfactant constituents. This allows for the stable incorporation of insoluble benefit agents.
Specifically, the compositions include: a) water; b) one or more anionic surfactants from 2% to 20% w/w of the composition; c) one or more amine oxide surfactants from 1% to 10% w/w of the composition; and d) a hydrophobically modified alkali-swellable acrylic emulsion (HASE) polymer from 0.5% to 3.0% w/w (solids) of the total composition.
