A recent paper published in ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering describes eutectic-based formulas with potential as a "new class of hair styling agents." These formulas incorporate a eutectic mixture (choline chloride and urea) as a solvent, a natural reducing agent (l-cysteine) and a decapeptide.
The cysteine and decapeptide were found capable of rearranging new disulfide bonds in keratin fibers. In addition, the formulas improved the mechanical properties of Asian hair by 10% over commercial chemical stylers, suggesting an alternative to harsh treatments.
