Wrinkle-filling is one approach to anti-aging, and polymer-based compositions have been designed to do just that. Siloxanes are an example, which often require mixing with other compounds prior to or during application to allow for resin- and catalyst-based polymerization or cross-linking to occur.

However, because these compositions include polymerized or cross-linked materials, they exhibit peeling or flaking after a few hours of wear, and are often difficult to remove. There is thus a need for polymeric materials that have desirable cosmetic effects and are more easily removed. This was the focus of a new patent application:
Photo-activated hydrogels
WIPO Patent Application WO/2016/105844
Publication date: June 30, 2016
Assignee: L'Oréal, V. Casasanta III, W.B. Carlson and G.D. Phelan
Described here are compositions including a polymer that cross-links upon exposure to light and/or heat. In some embodiments, these compositions are used to fill fine lines and wrinkles, to provide a cosmetic benefit. In others, they have desirable release properties for embedded materials. These materials are also suitable in medicine, industry, biotechnology, energy storage, batteries, agriculture, chemical safety and drug delivery.
According to the inventors, the activated, cross-linked polymer imparts a hydrophilic network that is stable to peeling or flaking but is easily removed, for example, by scrubbing or brushing in the presence of water and a surfactant and/or oil.
