Study Compares Topical Microbiome vs. Conventional Skin Care

14 healthy volunteers aged 23-45 years old participated in a double-blind study and were advised to use microbiome supporting (MS) products on one cheek and benchmark (BM) products on the other cheek daily for three weeks.

Researchers from Stockholm and Linköping University recently compared the difference between topically applied microbiome-supporting skin care and conventional skin care in correlation to biophysical skin parameters. Results were published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science.

To conduct the double-blind study, 14 healthy volunteers ages 23-45 years old were directed to use microbiome-supporting (MS) products on one cheek and benchmark (BM) products on the other cheek daily for three weeks. The skin microbiome was then analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing and biophysical parameters were assessed using an Antera 3D camera. Base measurements were taken at the start of the study and again at the end.

The study found improvements in the microbiome and biophysical parameters within three weeks of using MS skin care, while BM skin care only gave improved skin roughness. Also, although MS skin care gave significant improvements in several parameters compared with baseline, they were not significant when compared with BM skin care.
