Previous work from Burt's Bees has highlighted bakuchiol as a potential natural alternative to retinol. New research presented during this year's AAD virtual conference also reinforced bakuchiol's anti-aging efficacy, but unexpectedly uncovered an opposite mechanism to that of retinol.

As Hemali Gunt, Ph.D., head of clinical and scientific affairs for Burt's Bees R&D, explains in this podcast interview, crosstalk between hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and SIRT-1 is bolstered by bakuchiol but not retinol. She adds that both sirtuin and HIF-1α levels decrease as a function of age. Therefore, these signaling pathways and its effects are of interest in anti-aging treatments.
