Improving skin hydration, pliability and thickness

This patent is directed improving skin texture, feel and appearance by applying an acetylation agent to natural dermal collagen under conditions whereby the two react to form a modified collagen. This modified collagen has a higher net charge and charge density than natural dermal collagen, which improves or increases skin hydration, pliability and/or thickness. This treatment preferably follows ablation or needle puncturing of the stratum corneum, to alter the net charge and charge density of reacted tissues and tissue surfaces to provide therapeutic benefits or rejuvenate skin.

Specifically, a slightly alkaline solution and subsequent acetylation agents in alkaline buffer, or in oils or penetration enhancers, is applied to react with deprotonated free amines on tissue proteins, thereby altering the net charge characteristics and charge density of the reacted tissue. In general, the acetylation agent may include agents in the form of sulfonic acids, anhydrides, sulfonyl chlorides and acid chlorides. Concentrations of the acetylation agents preferably range from 10 mg/mL to 50 mg/mL.

2-Deoxy-monosaccharide esters with anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative activity

Described by this invention are potent 2-deoxy-monosacharide esters and their compositions to treat tumor growth and inflammatory and/or proliferative dermatological diseases. According to the inventors, research suggests short chain fatty acids have antiproliferative, apoptotic and differentiating properties, and can act as inhibitors of histone deacetylases. This patent discloses administering compounds having both a hydrocarbyl portion and a carboxylic acid portion. In particular, fatty acids include, but are not limited to, those having chain lengths comparable to an unbranched fatty acid of approximately 3 to 14 carbons in length. They can be straight or branched and can include single, double and/or triple bonds. Non-limiting examples include valproate, butyrate, phenylacetate and phenylbutyrate.

Dispersing botanical powders

Botanical powders are used for a range of functions in personal care; e.g., as actives, emollients and emulsifiers. To obtain the desired functionality and benefits from these powders, several processes can be used to extract and purify them; however, such processes can add cost to the ingredient and affect the properties of the resulting powder. The use of less processed botanical powders is one solution but these can be more difficult to incorporate, particulary if they contain an insoluble fraction, which often produces undesired sediment. The present invention therefore addresses improving the dispersion of botanical powders into personal care compositions without settling.

Disclosed are compositions comprising at least one active compound, one botanical powder and a delivery system, wherein at least a portion of the powder is encapsulated in the delivery system. In this case, "delivery system" refers to cerasomes and/or liposomes such as phospholipids, ceramides, glycosphingolipids and other ingredients.

Cyclodextrin as a UV- and infrared-screening agent

Biodegradible silicon-based delivery vehicles

Disclosed in this patent are biodegradable and porous silicon-based carriers for the controlled delivery of therapeutic peptides. According to the inventors, this technology addresses a need for improved dosage forms for the controlled release of therapeutic agents, which are also biocompatible and capable of delivering biomolecules in a sustained fashion. In certain embodiments, the carrier material or formulation containing the carrier material is first administered to a patient. Then the therapeutic agent or formulation containing the agent is administered to the same site and allowed to adsorb into the pores of the carrier material. Adsorption may take place over minutes, hours or days until an equilibrium is reached in the surrounding environment, e.g., on the surface or within the body of a patient. Thereafter, the composition may release a therapeutically effective amount of the agent over a time period that is longer than the initial re-equilibration time period (i.e., hours, days, weeks, months or even years). Exemplary routes of administration may include oral, subcutaneous, topical, ophthalmic, intranasal, aerosol or others.

Process to improve wetess protection from solid stick antiperspirants

According to this patent, there is room to improve the wetness protection provided by solid stick antiperspirants, to more closely approach that of soft solid antiperspirants. In accordance, a method of manufacturing solid stick antiperspirants is provided herein that includes combining an antiperspirant active with one or more structurants and a surfactant to form a mixture, then dispensing the mixture from a nozzle to fill a dispensing package and form a solid stick. The surfactant used has a melt temperature that is greater than the crystallization onset temperature of the solid stick antiperspirant. Also, the antiperspirant active and surfactant are in contact for approximately 5 min or less from the moment they are mixed until they are dispensed from the nozzle.

Glycerol/salicylic acid ester preservative

In order to produce a broad spectrum preservative or antimicrobial system, several different types of preservatives are often combined; but this increases costs and can potentially affect the stability of the formulation. However, it has been discovered that a mixture of esters of glycerol and salicylic acid provides an effective preservative or antimicrobial system. This mixture can be used in all types of formulations, e.g., cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, cleansers, disinfectants, etc. Further, the esterification of the salicylic acid molecule with the glycerol molecule reduces the caustic effects of the salicylic acid by effectively neutralizing its carboxylic acid group. Also, the presence of glycerol can have a soothing effect on skin.

Functionalized, environmentally benign nanoparticles with improved efficacies

Provided herein are functionalized and environmentally benign nanoparticles (EbNPs) produced by: 1) synthesizing native EbNPs, 2) functionalizing them with active agents, and 3) customizing them with additional surface properties using one or more modifiers. For example, negatively charged Indulin AT (IAT) EbNPs that are suitable for functionalization with cationic metal ions are first synthesized. Next, antimicrobial silver ions from a water solution of silver nitrate are adsorbed. Finally, the surface potential of the particles is reversed from negative to positive via adsorption of a positively charged polyelectrolyte. In this case, a relatively benign multifunctional cationic polyelectrolyte, polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC), is used, which frequently has been employed in environmental applications such as water treatment; consumer products such as cosmetics; and biological applications including insecticides and algaecides.

In addition to beneficial post-utilization performance, EbNPs may deliver higher efficiency in terms of active agent employed, in comparison with persistent nanoparticle systems. Specifically, in biocidal tests on the human pathogens E. coli and P. aeruginosa, silver ion-infused EbNPs with a positive surface charge (Ag-EbNP-PDADMAC) exhibited significantly higher antimicrobial activity, in terms of Ag equivalent, than silver nanoparticles.
