Low pH Enhances Niacinamide-induced Cellular Autophagy

Niacinamide is a known anti-aging and overall skin wellness ingredient but recent work by Procter & Gamble (P&G) underlines its ability to induce cellular autophagy as well, especially when the pH level is optimized.

The research, published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology, aimed to assess whether niacinamide could induce the autophagy related 5 (ATG5) marker in human keratinocytes and whether low-pH niacinamide formulations could enhance this response in 3D skin models. Results indicated niacinamide at pH 3.8 showed stronger induction of autophagy‐related genes including ATG5 compared with pH 5.8 formulas.
