Recent published in the Journal of Dietary Supplements suggests that ergothioneine could mitigate telomere shortening caused by oxidative stress.

Researchers cultured primary human fibroblasts under standard oxidative conditions and treated them with different concentrations of ergothioneine for eight weeks. Telomere length measurements were taken by high-throughput quantitative fluorescent in situ hybridization (HT Q-FISH).

Findings indicated that under oxidative stress, the treatment maintained significantly longer median telomere lengths and significantly reduced the percentage of short telomeres. The telomere shortening rate also was reduced.
