Abstract: The authors investigated the intro-individual and the inter-individual variations of transepidermal water loss, capacitance and microcirculation in 10 different facial areas in subjects with "sensitive skin" and in subjects with "non-sensitive skin."

Skin reactivity to various stimuli displays regional differences according to body site as has been widely documented. These regional differences have been attributed principally to two factors. The first is anatomical differences in skin structure. The second is skin biophysical properties such as barrier function, skin permeability and vascular response to topically applied substances. These findings imply that the results of studies on irritation and cosmetic evaluations performed on different body areas cannot be easily correlated.
