Preservatives are a necessary part of the formulation process, and with the popularity of natural cosmetics, natural alternatives have also grown in demand.
Many products will now advertise on packaging that they do not contain parabens, yet per ChemicalSafetyFacts.org, parabens used in cosmetics are identical to those found in nature. Still, a common misconception is that natural ingredients equate to quality and research indicates that parabens may dirupt hormone levels, however it is still being investigated.
Ultimately, whether using phenoxyethanol, parabens or a natural alternative, formulation choice is up to the formulator.
