During the 29th European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Congress, Beiersdorf researchers presented the results of two tests showing a novel allergen-free fragrance imparts anti-inflammatory properties and is non-irritating to skin.

In vitro, tests in skin cells showed the fragrance composition reduced the expression of both prostaglandin E2 and interleukin-8 after the application of a stressor substance. In vivo, human subjects initially shaved their forearm skin for three consecutive days to induce irritation, after which the fragrance was applied in a test moisturizer formula. Redness was significantly reduced in the fragranced, moisturizer-treated skin (additional details were not disclosed).

As Beiersdorf explained, fragrances are some of the most frequent causes of allergic contact dermatitis. As such, the test fragrance was developed without any of the 26 commonly known allergens. It also omitted some 60+ potential allergens currently under evaluation. However, it reportedly still had a pleasant scent, which according to the company could significantly improve the cosmetic acceptability of moisturizers and, consequently, enhance patient compliance and treatment adherence.

'The long-standing paradigm of fragranced moisturizers considered as [an] allergenic risk in the treatment of xerotic dermatoses may soon become obsolete.'

Julia Gallinger, Ph.D., a senior scientist at Beiersdorf AG’s Research and Development department explained, “A moisturizer containing our novel fragrance could provide an improved treatment option for people with dry skin conditions. It would be both pleasant to use due to its scent, enhancing patients' treatment adherence and actively sooth[ing] inflammation. Hence, the long-standing paradigm of fragranced moisturizers considered as [an] allergenic risk in the treatment of xerotic dermatoses may soon become obsolete. The fragrance has been integrated into two new Eucerin UreaRepair PLUS products for dry skin to provide skin care with a pleasurable experience.”

In addition, a patient preference study among 86 individuals having dry skin and using the fragranced moisturizer for two weeks showed that 97% agreed it did not feel like something they had to apply to their skin; they enjoyed it. In total, 91% confirmed the scented lotion made their care routine more pleasant. Furthermore, 71% confirmed they liked the scented product better than the unscented moisturizer they normally use.
