How L’Oréal's Wearable UV Sensor Could Make Over Sun Care Habits


High-tech skin care just got more accessible. My Skin Track UV—a wearable UV exposure-tracking device from L’Oréal-owned La Roche-Posay that promotes healthy skin habits—is now available in select Apple Store locations and online, making it available to consumers for the first time.

The wearable device provides consumers with instant status updates on both UVA and UVB exposure. After being activated by the sun, the battery-free sensor is powered by its user’s smartphone; there, an accompanying app provides insights to location-based humidity, pollen and pollution levels alongside UV data. The app stores up to three months of data, allowing users to monitor their exposure over time.

The app also offers consumers a curated skin care regimen based on the sensor’s collected data, complete with product recommendations.

The research that went into the development of this technology indicated that wearables have the power to inspire true behavioral change by helping people measure and understand their exposure to various environmental aggressors and take action,” said Laetitia Toupet, global general manager, La Roche-Posay.

The device was developed by L'Oréal's Technology Incubator; its global vice president and head, Guive Balooch, added: “Our research has long indicated the need for better consumer understanding of personal UV exposure. We created this battery-free sensor to seamlessly integrate into the lives, and daily routines, of those using it. We hope the launch of this problem-solving technology makes it easier for people to make smart, sun-safe choices.”
