A recent paper in Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces highlights the theory of "homology of cosmetic and food," connecting the dots between the safety, efficacy and accessibility of food-derived skin care ingredients to treat skin aging. The authors believe this "will be an inevitable trend of dermatology in the future," noting that relevant key biomarkers and biochemical pathways for antioxidant effects, collagen protection and melanin inhibition can be effectively controlled by animal-derived and plant-derived foods. Vitamin C is a prime example, which has long been — and continues to be — an industry darling. In the U.S. alone, the vitamin C skin care market is projected to reach USD $2.2 billion by 2032, recording a CAGR of 4.53% from 2024-2032, per Astute Analytica. This product spotlight explores one example of such: TruSkin's Vitamin C Facial Serum.

TruSkin Vitamin C Facial Serum
TruSkin's Vitamin C Facial Serum is claimed to deliver complexion-enhancing results. This best-selling product pairs vitamin C's antioxidant power with three key skin care ingredients: vitamin E, hyaluronic acid and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM).
Vitamin C is known for its ability to diminish fine lines, uneven tone and hyperpigmentation, in turn improving dullness, breakouts and dark spots. Backed by nourishing vitamin E, it is said to outmaneuver free radicals. In addition, hyaluronic acid and MSM encourage collagen production and boost radiance for "truly nourished and healthy-feeling skin."
The brand underscores how these ingredients give skin the nutrients it needs to enhance firmness, barrier function suppleness and luminosity through skin friendly ingredients — like a gentler yet equally effective form of vitamin C, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, to ensure all skin types can enjoy its benefits without irritation. The silky, lightweight formula thus specializes in restoration, hydration and preservation.
Vitamin C — Effective but Unstable
More than a decade ago, Hsu highlighted vitamin C's efficacy in skin care as well, noting that formulators used it in products for a luminous, bright and even complexion. "Actives such as vitamin C, or L-ascorbic acid, [are] effective reducing agent[s] that can momentarily slow the melanin-biosynthesis pathway in skin. Vitamin C is also known to protect skin from ultraviolet B (UVB) damage and enhance collagen synthesis, therefore it is widely used in cosmetics as a whitening ingredient."
Hsu continued, however, that due to vitamin C's instability, several derivatives have been developed for cosmetic application:
ethyl ascorbic acid,
magnesium L-ascorbyl-2-phosphate,
L-ascorbic acid 2-glucoside and
sodium ascorbyl phosphate — the derivative used in TruSkin's formula.
Lionetti, et al., further explained, "The introduction of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) into finished formulations is difficult because this ingredient is extremely unstable. It quickly oxidizes, especially in aerobic conditions and under exposure to light." Certainly something for formulators to be aware of.

User Feedback: TruSkin Vitamin C Facial Serum
Following are example user reviews (edited for style), selected for their anecdotal insights on product form and function.
It has only been a week and the hyperpigmentation on my neck, back and sides has changed dramatically. I use this twice daily, in the morning and at night, and the look and feel of my skin has almost done a 180-degree turn.
It soaks in and doesn’t slide off. My skin absolutely glows.
I started seeing "the miracle" after two months; I’ll highly recommend it but you must give it time to work. My skin is brighter, my dark spots are less visible. I’m extremely happy with the results so far.
This is my favorite vitamin serum. It is not sticky like others and dries instantly.
Amazing serum that feels beautiful on your skin and dramatically you see results of fine lines disappear.
