Native Australian trees were the inspiration for essential oils recently highlighted by Down Under Enterprises.

The Australian wood oils collection includes natural essential oils derived from the wood of native trees. They offer functional properties as well as reportedly striking fragrance base notes.

According to the company, sandalwood is perhaps the most well-known, and more than 80% of the world’s supply is from Australia. Sandalwood, with a soft and woody aroma, demonstrates antimicrobial benefits against: Staphylococcus epidermis, S. aureus, MRSA, S. sapropyticus, S. pyogenes, S. dysgalaciae, Pneumococcal, Arcanobacterium haemolyticum, Legionella preumophilia, Propionibacterium acnes, Acinetobater calcoaceticus, Candida albicans and Saccahromyces cerevisiae.

Research by Sydney University also has shown sandalwood has anti-inflammatory properties, in line with the traditional use of sandalwood. These anti-inflammatory properties are typically attributed to the plant's alpha-bisabolol content.

Lesser known are other unique wood oils, such as blue cypress, which also demonstrates, anti-inflammatory and pain–relieving properties against allergic hives, insects, rheumatoid arthritis, general joint pain and swelling. It has also been shown to be an anti-irritant, soothing diaper rash and reducing erythema. Blue cypress imparts a smoky, licorice and woody characteristic.

Produced through steam distillation of the wood, the procurement and production of the oils are documented to ensure a sustainable and traceable supply.

Dee-Ann Prather, founder and president of Down Under Enterprises, stated, “We have worked closely with our growers so that each oil offers a solid sustainability story, backed by our certified system of traceability.”
