CEP Courses

Opening the event on Monday, May 1, will be two Continuing Education Program (CEP) courses, kicked off by Benjamin Schwartz, customer innovation manager at AAK. Schwartz will discuss formulating with natural oils and butters for the cosmetics industry, including best practices. The focus of the talk will be how the structure of fatty acids composing the triglycerides of oils and butters determine the interdependent properties of oxidative stability, compatibility, solid fat content and crystallization. Further, it will examine how these properties then inform choices of oils, butters and their derivatives within different personal care and cosmetic products, including anhydrous and emulsion-based products.

In parallel, a second CEP course will introduce attendees to the sensory characterization of cosmetic emulsions. Topics will include appearance, rub-out, pick-up and afterfeel, which can help formulators build an emotional relationship with the consumer, and trigger excitement and encourage consumers to purchase the product again. Speakers for this session include Gabriella Baki, Ph.D., of the University of Toledo; Mark Chandler, of ACT Solutions Corp., and Nina Poccia, senior sensory scientist at L'Oréal R&D.
