Psychological stress has been shown to negatively impact skin's condition. Eri Kawashima, of KOSÉ Corp., presented work related to this in her poster, "Impact of Daily Stress on Skin: Epinephrine Directly Affects the Skin Barrier Function," during IFSCC 2024 in Brazil — for which she was a poster award finalist.

Honing in on Epinephrine Mechanisms in Skin

"A lot of studies have shown that psychological stress can worsen skin conditions," said Kawashima. "This is thought to be due to the stress hormone cortisol and perhaps even epinephrine, commonly known as adrenaline. But the effect of adrenaline and its mechanism was not well-understood, so we focused on epinephrine and conducted research on how it affects our skin homeostasis."

Disrupting Tight Junctions and Inducing Inflammation

In this video interview, she explains the study and results, including findings that epinephrine directly disrupts tight barrier junctions and increases IL-6, inducing inflammation. Watch now to learn more.
