euxyl® PE 9010: Giving Phenoxyethanol a Boost

Abstract: euxyl® PE 9010 is a liquid cosmetic preservative based on phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin. The material acts by reducing the contact angle of water, thus improving surface wetting and the preservative activity of phenoxyethanol, as is shown here. In addition, the material is shown to be effective against a broad spectrum of microbes.

euxyl® PE 9010 (request a sample) is a liquid cosmetic preservative based on phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin. The addition of ethylhexylglycerin affects the interfacial tension at the cell membrane of microorganisms, improving the preservative activity of phenoxyethanol, as is shown here. euxyl® PE 9010 also is shown by the schülke Koko or repeat challenge testing to have a broad, balanced spectrum of activity against bacteria, yeasts and mold fungi.

Reducing Surface Tension
euxyl® PE 9010 reduces the contact angle of water significantly, thus improving the wetting of surfaces. Figure 1 clearly demonstrates this phenomenon on polyethylene. With ethylhexylglycerin, the contact of phenoxyethanol with the cell membrane of microorganisms can also be optimized and the antimicrobial efficacy of phenoxyethanol is therefore improved.

Repeated Challenge Tests
To determine the preservative effect of chemical preservatives in cosmetic formulations, euxyl® PE 9010 was added in different concentrations to unpreserved samples. A constant microorganism load was achieved by means of periodic inoculation (inoculation cycles) of the test preparations.

Immediately before inoculation, samples of the individual preparations were streaked out onto nutrient media. The preservative effect was evaluated on the basis of the microorganism growth on the nutrient media. The longer the time before the occurrence of the first microbial growth, the more effective the preservative.

Experience has shown that a well-preserved product should remain growth-free for 6 inoculation cycles in order to ensure the shelf-life in the original packaging required in practice (30 months). Oil/water and water/oil systems as well as shampoos and bath additives preserved with use concentrations of between 0.5 and 1.0 % euxyl® PE 9010 proved to be well-preserved even after three months storage at +40°C (see Figure 2).
