Inolex's Spectrastat PHL (INCI: Caprylhydroxamic Acid (and) 1,2-Hexanediol (and) Propanediol) provides broad-spectrum preservation efficacy at pH levels from 4-8 and is ideal for sensitive skin formulations.

Spectrastat PHL is especially useful in high water solutions, cold-process applications such as toners, surfactant systems and wet wipes. It is completely liquid, homogeneous and pumpable even at low temperatures. The ingredient includes 1,2-hexanediol, a light, medium-spreading emollient that has antimicrobial properties; caprylhydroxamic acid (CHA), a chelating agent; and propanediol.

By using the active with hurdle technology, formulations that pass challenge tests can be created without including traditional preservatives such as parabens, isothiazolinones and formaldehyde donors. According to the company, one benefit of the ingredient is that it performs at a neutral pH; a state where other alternative preservation systems are ineffective.
