Algae-based bioactive for a more youthful, brighter eye contour

The fragile skin in the eye area is one of the first parts of the body to reveal visible signs of aging, often brought on by fatigue, stress, and lifestyle. As a result, many consumers are seeking safe, easy-to-use products that can beautify the eye contour area and enhance skin luminosity.

With Seanactiv™, BASF Care Creations has developed a new bioactive ingredient based on the marine algae Fucus vesiculosus (commonly known as Bladderwrack) that works in three ways: by helping fight dark circles, reducing the appearance of wrinkles, and enhancing skin luminosity around the eyes - all within the first week of application.

Seanactiv is characterized by a high content of fucoidan, a sulphated polysaccharide characterized by fucose monomers and extracted from the marine algae species. Fucoidan has been widely reported in scientific literature to provide multiple wellness benefits, ranging from being an antioxidant, through having anti-irritation properties, to having the ability to improve the skin barrier.

Fighting undereye dark circles

In vitro, BASF researchers evaluated the ability of Seanactiv to enhance the effect of the body’s own heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) on the skin. This protein promotes heme degradation into cytoprotective products and reduces the appearance of dark circles around the eyes. Compared to an untreated control, Seanactiv showed an ability to noticeably improve the appearance of undereye dark circles. The activity was supported by the ingredient’s substantial fucoidan content. In a clinical study with 24 female volunteers between ages 18 and 65, Seanactiv formulated at 1% in a cream demonstrated an improvement in the appearance of undereye dark circles by increasing the Individual Typological Angle (ITA) value, a measure of skin pigmentation degree, by 11% within one week, and 15% within 28 days.

Reducing the appearance of crow’s feet wrinkles

Wrinkles and fine lines are, along with other signs of aging, linked to a loss of collagen I. In an in vitro test, Seanactiv was tested for its effect on the skin’s natural production of collagen I. The skin of people using Seanactiv was noticeably smoother and more supple than the untreated control group. The activity was supported by the ingredient’s richness in fucoidan. In vivo, Seanactiv helped to significantly reduce the roughness of the skin surface by 14% within one week of application, with visually perceptible improvement in the appearance of crow’s feet wrinkles.

Improving skin luminosity

Epigenetic regulators in the skin can work to improve cell vitality and limit visible signs of aging. In vitro tests demonstrated that Seanactiv works with the body’s own epigenetic regulators to improve the appearance of skin. In vivo, a visually perceptible improvement in skin luminosity was clear to see.

Taken together, these results show that Seanactiv harnesses the power of Fucus vesiculosus to visibly improve key aspects of eye contour appearance quickly and effectively, within just one week.
