At In-Cosmetics in Milan, Sinerga will debut a deodorizer derived from star anise designed to inhibit enzymes and bacteria in order to reduce or eliminate malodor.

Verochic (INCI: Shikimic Acid) is derived from Illicium verum (star anise), and while its main application is for deodorancy, it also reportedly exhibits anti-acne, anti-dandruff and exfoliating activities.

The deodorant active is said to exhibit antimicrobial activity by inhibiting the growth of M. furfur and P. acnes and to inhibit the degradation of triglycerides into free fatty acids. The company found that the ingredient can also serve as an exfoliating agent by enhancing peeling capacity by increasing TEWL.

The active is recommended at 0.5–1.0% in formulations where enzymatic and bacterial inhibition should be reached in order to reduce or eliminate human body odors. It is a fine white powder with a neutral characteristic scent. According to the company, the active has a > 99% purity, and < 10 ppm of heavy metals.
