International Specialty Products Corp. recently launched a broad spectrum preservative in Europe that is unique in that its phenylpropanol content is nature-identical. Optiphen MIT Ultra is a liquid blend of methylisothiazolinone and phenylpropanol that is aimed at preserving natural products. Natural product manufacturers continue to seek preservative solutions that maintain the naturalness of their products. In response, this ingredient is positioned as being one step closer to an all-natural preservative option.
According to the company, phenylpropanol is an identical material to that found naturally in flowers and berries, and it conforms to personal care grade standards by effectively protecting against bacteria, yeast and mold over a broad pH range. The preservative: is stable at elevated temperatures, up to 70°C • has a low odor • can be added directly to formulations • is recommended for use in sunscreens, hair care, skin care and cosmetics • resists discoloration and turbidity • is globally approved • is compatible with a wide range of raw materials • is chemically stable • is paraben-free.
