Europelab, part of Derme&Co, recently introduced Biolichen CosmoPreserve, a patented, Cosmos Organic certified preservative for beauty and personal care products. In addition, the company released research highlighting its antioxidant, cytoprotective, wound-healing and antimicrobial effects.
Lichen Metabolites for Advanced Preservation and Skin Protection
BioLichen CosmoPreserve (INCI: Triethylcitrate (and) Cladonia Stellaris (and) Cladonia Rangiferina) is designed to meet the demand for natural, high-performance preservatives. According to the company, it offers broad-spectrum antimicrobial efficacy and delivers added value through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective benefits.
These effects are linked to lichen metabolites like usnic acid and atranorin, derived from Cladonia stellaris and Cladonia rangiferina —compounds known for their therapeutic properties, per the company.
Proven Antioxidant and Wound Healing Benefits
Recent studies reinforce CosmoPreserve’s multifunctional claims. According to Europelab, when tested on human keratinocytes, the ingredient reduced UVA-induced oxidative stress by up to ~26% and boosted cell viability and regeneration.
In addition, after a 24-hr treatment with the ingredient at 0.003%, wound closure rates in human keratinocytes increased by nearly 58%. The preservative’s UV-screening properties at 235 nm, 250 nm and 285 nm also further enhance its ability to protect against environmental stressors.
Formulation and Application
CosmoPreserve is a transparent, thermostable, lipo-soluble liquid suitable for o/w emulsions and surfactant systems, including at high temperatures. According to the company:
- the ingredient performs best in formulations with a pH of 4.0 to 7.5;
- its recommended usage is 0.75 – 1.00% for antimicrobial activity; and
- at 1 – 4%, the ingredient provides rejuvenating effects.
