Belgian biosurfactants developer AmphiStar has been awarded €12.5 million in funding through the European Innovation Council (EIC). The funding, which includes a €2.5 million grant and €10 million equity investment, will reportedly accelerate the production of AmphiStar’s microbial biosurfactants, which are sustainably developed using bio-based waste feedstock.
AmphiStar’s technology purportedly provides a cleaner, sustainable alternative to synthetic surfactants by avoiding the use of virgin crops like palm oilAmphiStar
AmphiStar CEO Pierre-Franck Valentin said, “This funding reflects the confidence that EIC has in AmphiStar’s ability to transform one of the key chemical markets. With growing consumer pressure on industry to offer less harmful products, the financial support ensures that we will continue to lead the way in replacing environmentally damaging synthetic surfactants with bio-based alternatives that retain functionality and performance while being kind to people and our wider ecosystem.”
This new funding builds on €12 million previously raised through CBE-JU projects, regional grants, and a pre-series A funding round backed by venture capital investors. AmphiStar COO Sophie Roelants stated, “This funding success enables us to take the next steps in AmphiStar’s journey to commercialization.”
AmphiStar’s platform leverages synthetic biology to create tailored biosurfactants for specific applications, offering high-performance, environmentally-friendly solutions for industries such as personal care and home care.
